The Sewing Machine Activist
Insights from the BIG PICTURE NARRATIVE of a SEWING MACHINE ACTIVIST: Compassion, Economy & Resistance
COMPASSION ECONOMY & RESISTANCE
My Activism
My activism came into being at my sewing table in my mid 30s. With pen and paper placed at the ready beside my sewing machine, some of my best ideas came forth as I stitched my imaginings into existence. It blossomed as I ‘blue skyed’ about what I might do with my developing craft but I dreamed big about a lot of other things too.
Troubled By
Troubled by the circumstances of my upbringing and the generalised breakdown of community all around me, I thought deeply about the need for systems change, and what that might look like.
I Flew To India
Metaphorically, the day I flew to India, my sewing machine and patterns in hand, with the aim to create ethical workshops in the northern Himalayan town of McLeod Ganj … was the day my activism took flight.
Later On
Later on, when I realised I didn’t have the strength to remain on the frontline, my activism shifted to my writing and I decided to pen the book Insights from the Big Picture Narrative of a Sewing Machine Activist: Compassion, Economy & Resistance
